Why do we do this?
It's the most bizarre thing ever, tying food to strings and racing to see who can eat it the fastest without hands. Maybe we just like to make fools of ourselves. Also,
Why do we do this at HALLOWEEN?
This activity has virtually nothing to do with the holiday. If anyone knows (or can make up) the story about why we have this tradition, I would love to hear it.
sorry for the random-ness!

silly megan.
once upon a time, there was a witch who hated children who tricked or treated at her house, and she decided to trick them with a treat. she put a spell on them that they couldn't leave her property until they at all of the floating donuts in her yard. to make matters more interesting, she made their candy bags (that they carried from door to door) so heavy that they couldn't lift their arms. and you know children--they won't put down their candy. so the children pretty much had to bob for donuts in the air.
it used to be tradition that whenever someone didn't want children bothering them, they could hang donuts from strings outside their doors or on their fences--somewhere in the yard where they would be prominently displayed. this would scare children off. But as years passed, the generations forgot the exact details of this story and they thought they had to eat the donuts to keep the witches away.
that's why we do it.
Oh i love you britt. You are the greatest. thanks for this very historically accurate explanation :)
well...britt's story is just not true. i can't prove it, but i stand by that statement.
as to my own answer...google let me down. i have no idea. but i did find this article that has doughnuts mentioned in this string theory.
yes i read it. no. i am not any wiser for doing so. :)
isn't it great that people can't DISprove my story? it really might be correct!
